Avis Denise Newsom

Events

Avis Denise Newsom, 54, entered into her eternal rest on Sept. 10, 2018, at St. Vincent Anderson Hospital following a courageous fight with Leiomyoscarcoma (a rare form of cancer). She was surrounded by a host of loving family and friends as she made her transition.
Avis was the youngest of four children born Aug. 26, 1964, in Anderson, to Frank Eugene and Mary Jane (Weatherly) Newsom.
She was baptized at Wallace Temple A.M.E. Zion Church and began her spiritual walk as a "Bud of Promise." She continued to attend both Wallace Temple and Sherman Street Church of God. As an adult, she became a member of Eastern Star Church, Fishers, where she served as an usher.
Avis attended Anderson Public Schools and graduated from Madison Heights High School class of 1982. She attended Indiana University and received her BA from Indiana Wesleyan University.
She enjoyed a variety of work experiences including The Herald Bulletin newspaper in Anderson, Resorts Condominiums International (RCI) at "The Pyramids," Angie's List, and ADT, all of Indianapolis.
Her favorite pastime was traveling. However, she also loved to read, listen to music, play golf, dance and visit with family and friends.
She was a sorority member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Epsilon Omega Chapter of Anderson. Avis would often state "I had to be an AKA....the best in all the world!!!...Loving the day that I became a Classy AKA."
Avis's passing creates a great family loss. She will be greatly missed by her mother, Mary Jane Newsom; her siblings, Francienne (James) Brice of Tyler, Texas, Kirk (Barbara) Newsom of Frisco, Texas, Deanna (Nathan) Palmer of Fishers, Michael (Ellen) Kelley of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Stanley Kelley of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Nadine Kelley- Williams of Austell, Georgia; nieces, Kateeda Redd of Katy, Texas, Mercedes Rogers of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Deandra and Breanna McNeese of Fishers; great-nieces and nephews, Makayla, Javier (Avis's God son), Kennedy, Morgan, Dallas and DeMarkas.
Also, aunts, Shirley Weatherly, Carolyn Scott and Frances Weatherly; uncles, William J. Newsom, Clifton D. Holt, Gregory Kellam Scott and Charles Robertson; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Newsom.
A Celebration of Avis' Life will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Sherman Street Church of God, 1925 Sherman St., Anderson. The Rev. Ragen B. Mitchell will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. prior to the Service.
The family wishes to thank all medical providers for their tender loving care, especially Dr. Mares and the Intensive Care Unit and the Cancer Center's Medical Oncology, Radiation and Chemotherapy staffs of St. Vincent Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choosing in Avis' name.
