Barbara Murphy (Barbara Ann Davis), a long time Anderson resident, passed away peacefully on June 27th in Charlotte, N.C.
Barbara was born on Nov. 23, 1932, in Anderson, and was a 1951 graduate of Anderson High School. Immediately following high school, Barbara worked at Guide Lamp where she met her husband, Joe Murphy, and they married July 24, 1955. While raising her three sons in Anderson, she was an active member of Noble Street United Methodist Church and later Central Christian Church. She volunteered as a "Pink Lady" at Anderson Community Hospital, and enjoyed volunteering her time at many charitable events. Barbara also enjoyed playing golf, loved socializing with friends and liked being hostess for large gatherings of friends and family. Barbara also worked at Moneyhun's Fine Gifts and Furnishings and at Ivy Tech until she retired in 2001.
She is survived by her three sons and their families: Greg, Kathy, Ryan and Evan Murphy, of Concord, N.C.; Bruce, Beth, Allison and Abby Murphy, of Atlanta, Ga.; and Brad, Lori and Jack Murphy, of Minneapolis. She is also survived by her two sisters, Pat Gossett, of Escondido, Calif., and Beverly Irwin, of West Chester, Ohio. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Murphy, and her parents, Frank and Madonna Davis.
Memorial services will be held at Loose Funeral Home in Anderson on Saturday. There will be a visitation beginning at noon with the memorial service to begin at 1 p.m. Immediately following the service, Barbara's sons will host a gathering of family and friends to celebrate Barbara's life at the Loose Carriage House.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ivy Tech Foundation. The family believes that a scholarship for the Anderson Campus in Barbara's name will honor her memory in a way consistent with her life, helping to serve the Anderson community. Donations can be made by mailing a check to the Ivy Tech Foundation, 345 S. High Street, Muncie, IN 47305 (please add "Barbara Murphy" to the memo line on the check).
