Carolyn's Story

Carolyn Jane Long Mathews, was born May 21, 1925, in Anderson, Indiana, and died June, 22, 2017.
Carolyn was a 1943 graduate of Anderson High School in Anderson, Indiana. She received a B.A. degree from Ball State University in Social Sciences in 1962. In 1965, she received her M.A. degree from the same university, majoring in Latin and English.
Carolyn, a polio survivor, was employed as a Latin and English teacher for 26 years. She taught seven years in the Anderson area and 19 years in Chesapeake, Virginia. While in Indiana, she was a member of several women's auxiliaries. She was a Latin Club sponsor for many years in both Indiana and Virginia, organizing activities and several trips to Europe for her students. Carolyn was also an active member of the Beta Lota chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma International Society (a teacher's honorary society) from 1972 to 2010. She served as president of her chapter and attended many regional and international conventions in conjunction with her duties.
Carolyn was a former member of the Chesterfield Christian Church in Chesterfield, Indiana, and a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Carrollton, Virginia. Carolyn loved traveling, reading, playing bridge and writing daily in her journal. She was a great cook.
Carolyn was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, John Richard Mathews, and her parents, Raymond Sylvester and Vivian Bonner Long.
She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Bailey, who lives in Twinsburg, Ohio, and her four children, 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Carolyn was loved by her children: daughters, Carol Lee Barnes (Albert) of Jupiter, Florida, Cynthia Ellen Huggins (Bob) of Central Florida, Nancy Anne Meadows (Jim) of Newport News; and son, Richard Thomas Mathews (Brenda) of Carrollton, Virginia.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meadowbrook Memorial Park, Suffolk. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at The Chesapeake in Newport News.
Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
