Catherine's Story

Catherine Ann Hughes, 85, of Elwood, died Sept. 11, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Elwood. She was born Nov. 28, 1931, in Summitville, to Ivan and Olive (Stokes) Joyner. She was a 1949 graduate of Summitville High School and graduate of Indiana Wesleyan College with a teaching degree.
She married Robert E. "Gene" Hughes on June 21, 1953. She was a teacher at Duck Creek Boone School for a time and a dedicated homemaker and farm wife all of her life. She helped in nearly every aspect of the Hughes family farm. Catherine was a member of Frankton Christian Church where she was the pianist for many years. As she wanted so much in the past year, she is united with Gene in her Heavenly home.
Catherine's family includes daughter, Trudy Jo (Mark) Caldwell of Elwood; son, Jerry Alan Hughes of Elwood; three grandchildren, Carrie (Jason) McCorkle, Teela Adkins, and Tiffany Jacks; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert E. "Gene" Hughes in 2016; son, Rex Hughes in 1992; and three brothers, Robert Joyner, Lewis Joyner, and Loren Joyner.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, Elwood, with Pastors Roger Brooks and Jerry Young officiating. Burial will follow in Elwood City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
