Charles Anthony 'Tony' Shelton

February 26, 1949 - December 04, 2018

Charles Anthony 'Tony' Shelton ANDERSON [mdash] Charles Anthony "Tony" Shelton, 69, of Anderson, passed away on Dec. 4, 2018, after a short illness. He was born Feb. 26, 1949, in Anderson where he resided his entire life. Tony graduated from Madison Heights High School in 1967 and soon after joined the United States Army where he honorably served in the Special Forces from 1968 to 1971.
Tony had a servant's heart and spent 25 years with the City of Anderson Police Department, retiring as a lieutenant in 1996. He touched many lives there, both co-workers and even some of the people he dealt with on the streets.
Tony could fix anything and after retiring he started a one-man construction company. He unselfishly shared his talent with friends and family.
A friend described him as the only person he knew that never let him down. His brother Mike said, "Tony was the most righteous man he knew. His moral convictions were strong, and he lived that way his entire life." Another lifelong friend made sure Tony was baptized before his death, so he could prepare a way for him in heaven. His daughter, Maria, fondly recalls the special memories made on a whitewater rafting trip the two of them shared as father and teenage daughter.
Tony was passionately devoted to his family, always putting their needs above his own. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandsons, teaching, guiding, lending a listening ear, and attending their games and activities. Even their friends called him Pop Pop because he was always cheering for everyone.
Tony is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Diane Godin Shelton; children, Maria Rhea (B.J.), of Anderson, Daniel Shelton (Michelle), of Fort Smith, Arizona; grandsons, Justin, Ben, Ashton, Nick and Sam; uncles, John Claxon (Cheryle) and Adrian Shelton (Pat); aunt, Karen Lefler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles G. Shelton and Donna Claxon Shelton.
A Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 8, 2018 at Fall Creek Christian Church off Indiana 36, Pendleton, with the Rev. Tom Wiles officiating. Lunch will be served immediately following the service.
The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of choice.

Tony has been as close to a family member as anyone could be. He was the most sweet and ornery guy. So talented with his hands and so sharp with his mind. He was my brother’s best friend and as my heart aches for the family, it aches for my brother Ed too. You rarely find a friend to keep for over 50 years. God bless all who mourn and may Tony rest in God’s loving arms.

Tony and I went to MHHS together and went on APD at the same time. Tony was a ball to work with and we did a lot of police work together. I will always remember him as a good friend and a great cop. If God does not have a beat for you to walk then rest in peace my brother in blue !
