Essie M. Johnson


Essie M. Johnson, 87, fought a courageous battle but the Lord called her home to heaven.
Essie was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Grady, Alabama. She was the loving daughter of the Rev. Wilson and Cumie Pruitt. She was a member of Helicon Baptist Church. Essie graduated from Helicon Sr. High and attended Alabama State. In 1954 Essie moved to Anderson to join her husband, Elijah Johnson Sr. While making a loving home she graduated from the Custom Drapery Institute and the Academy of Millinery Design. She was a faithful member of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. She especially loved teaching Sunday School.
She retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors.
She leaves to mourn daughters, Shirley McCroy of Indianapolis, and Vickie (Earl Remson) Johnson-Remson; son, Elijah Johnson Jr.; grandchildren, Nikquisa, Carlos, Christopher, David; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, R.B. Pruitt, Hubert Pruitt; sisters, Exie Wingard and Mattie Hines.
Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. The viewing is from 10 a.m. to noon Monday prior to the service. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
