Gene Richard Bennett

Gene Richard Bennett, 84, of Austin, Texas, passed away on April 6, 2019.
He was born in Anderson, Indiana, to the late Lowell and Lucille DeNeve Bennett on July 16, 1934.
Gene attended Roosevelt School grades 1-8 and Anderson High grades 9-12 where he lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. He joined the United States Air Force in the summer of 1954 and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in 1974 after 20 years of service. His second career was with Celotex Corp. in Goldsboro, North Carolina, as a millwright where he worked until reaching full retirement age in 1999.
During his years living in Goldsboro, North Carolina, he expanded his talents and skills through active service with the Red Cross, as an EMT and a member of the local VFD. Another great interest was the Waynesborough Historical Village. He was well-known for the orchids he grew and was said to have the most beautiful gardens in the neighborhood. Gene had a passion for motorcycles and was an active member of the local Harley Davidson riding club. His love of the road and Harley Davidson continued well into his late 70s. Still with all of his activities and interests the most important to him was his family and the love he gave to them so freely.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne (Verbanes) Bennett; son, Gene Richard Bennett II; and grandson, Bradley Barwick.
Those surviving him are wife, Alice (Marsh) Bennett; daughters, Robin Phillips, Terri Barwick, and Lynda Turpin; and grandchildren, Shaun Phillips, James Holcomb and Susanne (Holcomb) Becker, Sarah Wiggins; and eight great-grandchildren.
He also leaves behind a brother, Lowell Wayne Bennett; and sister, Lois Ann (Bennett) Taylor.
A Celebration of Gene's life will be held at the time of internment on June 8, 2019, in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

It was such a pleasure to meet Gene. I so much appreciated Gene and Alice coming to Michigan to paint our girls bedrooms while our son was undergoing chemotherapy. It was just a wonderful and kind thing to do when our lives were so chaotic. I also enjoyed Gene's military stories and we both shared of love of animals. RIP Gene.
