George E. Sprague


George E. Sprague, 88, a lifelong resident of Frankton, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at his residence following an extended illness.
George was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Berkley, Michigan, the son of Melvin and Naomi (Jackley) Sprague. He graduated from Frankton High School in 1949. He was a faithful member of the Frankton First United Methodist Church.
On May 25, 1951, he married the love of his life, Mary Margaret (Etchison) Sprague, who passed away on Feb. 16, 2019. George served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War earning him a Purple Heart. He was retired from Delco Remy after 31.5 years of service. He worked alongside his father and son, Roger, at Sprague Auto Body in Frankton.
He was a substitute mail carrier, active with Boy Scouts and was Scoutmaster. George and his wife ran the General Merchandise Store for many years. George was a school bus driver for many years. He was a two-time president of the Frankton Jaycees, was a world senator and later had an award named after him, the George E. Sprague "Man of the Year."
George is survived by his children, Roger Sprague, Brian (Andrea) Sprague and Debbie Paschal, all of Frankton; grandchildren, Adonica (Jason) Ellis, George (Lindsay) Paschal, Kristina (Josh) Walls, Alicia (Sam) Schilke and Whitney Sprague; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Garek and Jonah Ellis, Mariah Paschal, Jentry and Jamisyn Walls, and Charli Schilke; brother, Melvin L. (Joan) Sprague of Alexandria; sister, Joyce (Larry) Sumner of Inverness, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Naomi Sprague; wife, Mary Margaret Sprague; granddaughter, Natalie Sprague; great-granddaughter, Ella Paschal; son-in-law, Ed Paschal; and a sister, Wanda Wright.
Funeral service celebrating George's life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2019, at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home in Frankton, with Pastor Dave Kyle officiating. Burial will follow in the K. of P. and I.O.O.F. Cemetery with full military graveside services.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 10, 2019, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frankton First United Methodist Church through the funeral home.
