Gerald E. Thomas


ALEXANDRIA [mdash] Gerald E. Thomas, 92, Alexandria, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at Community Hospital of Anderson.
Gerald was born on Jan. 26, 1927, at home in Summitville. He was the son of Roland Thomas and Avahnelle Thomas Hutton. He was a graduate of Summitville High School - class of 1945. He married Doris Nevin on April 2, 1949, and they were married 63 years before her passing. They lived in Summitville until 1978 when they moved to Alexandria. They spent 25 years enjoying their winters in Bonita Springs, Florida, where he played volleyball until near 80 years old and called bingo for the park.
Gerald ran a filling station in Summitville for several years before becoming a Prudential Insurance agent for 33 years. He was a 40-year member of the Summitville Fire Department, being Fire Chief five times and also chief of the ambulance crew. He was on the Town Board of Summitville for 20 years. They called him "Mayor" of Summitville and also the Chamber of Commerce. He was a reserve police officer for six years. He played softball for the Summitville AC's many years and then umpired for them. He also refereed high school basketball. He attended Alexandria First Baptist Church for several years. He also helped with the Alexandria Food Pantry for many years. Gerald loved watching his grandkids play sports and attended every game he could. He loved spending time with family, playing cards, and making homemade ice cream.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Bassett (Tom) Jarvis of Anderson; sons, Gary (Terri) Thomas and Bryan Thomas, all of Alexandria; grandsons, Shane (Lisa) Bassett of Jeffersonville, Travis (Mindy) Bassett of McDonough, Georgia, and Clint (Amanda) Thomas of New Palestine; granddaughter, Ginger (Cody) Thompson of Muncie; great-grandchildren, Brenden Bassett and Alexis Bassett of Jeffersonville, Trevor Bassett and Brianna Bassett of McDonough, Georgia, Olivia Thomas and Lylah Thomas of New Palestine and Zoey Thompson, Mia Thompson and Sadie Thompson of Muncie; brother-in-law, Larry Nevin of Scottsdale, Arizona; sisters-in-law, Betty Henderson of Mint Hill, North Carolina, and Linda Etchison of Scottsdale, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris in 2012; his parents; his brother, Ralph; and son-in-law, Bob Bassett.
Services honoring Gerald's life and legacy will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Alexandria First Baptist Church, 2107 S. Park Ave., Alexandria, with Pastor Michael Duetsch officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria. Friends may call at the Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday or after 12 noon at the church on Saturday prior to the services.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Summitville Fire Department or the Alexandria First Baptist Church through the funeral home.
