Gregory's Story

Text size

Gregory Joseph Furnish peacefully finished his Earthly assignment on Nov. 11, 2017, in Indianapolis after an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 8, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Joseph Amanuel Furnish and Maria Franowski Furnish. The family moved shortly thereafter to Indianapolis and eventually to Chesterfield.
After attending Highland High School, Gregory lived in the Indianapolis area and became a certified Iron Workers Local #22 Union welder and steel fabricator. He served as shop foreman and general manager at GMI in Indianapolis, Merrill-Stone Inc. in Plainfield, and Dalton Lubbert Group in Indianapolis, retiring in 2016. His welding expertise was well known, and he trained dozens of young iron workers throughout his career. Greg's excellent steel fabrication can be seen all along the Interstate highway system in and around Indianapolis, as well as at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Mounds Mall 10 Theater, Lucas Oil Stadium and many other major projects.
His happiest days were spent fishing, golfing, motorcycling, admiring and driving Ford Broncos, and cheering for his beloved football and baseball Cardinals. He also enjoyed playing guitar, listening to music and laughing and visiting with his children, family and friends. Gregory loved eating pickles, and most any pickled food. He was a connoisseur of cool sunglasses, good work boots and stylish tennis shoes. Greg found comfort in reading scripture and prayer during the days of his declining health.
Predeceased family members in addition to his parents include fatherly uncle, Forrest Bond Furnish; brother, Jeffery Jesse Furnish; brother-in-law, Daniel Joseph Gaither; Granddad Amanuel Furnish; and Grandma Effie Cecelia Luckett Furnish.
Survivors include son, Matthew Gregory (Katie) Furnish and grandsons, Henry Edward Furnish and Clark Fitzgerald Furnish of Cleveland, Ohio; daughter, Lana Michelle Furnish of Indianapolis; brother, Carroll
Ray Furnish; nephew, Jaime Ethan Furnish; niece, Yvonne Marie Furnish of West Palm Beach, Florida; sisters, Diane Kay Furnish Walton of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Gloria Yvonne (Woodrow) Wright of Alexandria; niece, Sarah Katherine Marintha Furnish and great-niece, Alayna Rose Childress of Mauckport, Indiana, as well as other extended family members.
A Celebration of Gregory's Life will be announced at a later date.
The family requests that memorial contributions be given in Gregory's honor to the Brownsburg Church of the Nazarene, 523 Locust Lane, Brownsburg, IN 46211 or to Morning Light, 4701 N. Keystone Ave., Suite 400, Indianapolis, IN, 46205.
