Harry H. "Hap" Herron, 94, Fishersburg, passed away Thursday at his home following an extended illness.
He was born on March 1, 1923, in Lapel to Daniel and Nellie (Schuyler) Herron.
Harry graduated from Lapel High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Rhineland, where he received the Bronze Star.
He retired in 1986 from the former Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors in Indianapolis. Before that time, he worked for Ford and Buick agencies as a mechanic.
Harry enjoyed anything to do with woodworking and had a small business sharpening lawn equipment.
He attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel and was an over 50-year member of the Lapel Masonic Lodge No. 625; the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis; the Murat Temple Shrine; and the Madison County Shrine Club. He was a lifetime member of the Lapel American Legion Post 212 and the Fortville VFW.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Henrietta (Strohmeier); one sister, Barb Presser; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John Robert, David Clark, and D. Clifford; and two sisters, Donna Rockhold and Ruth Troyer.
The family would like to thank Hospice Home Instead, Visiting Angels, and Dr. Stephen Wright for their services, and to thank Steve Rockhold for his kindness.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 N. Main St., Lapel, with Pastor Dewey Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, where the Lapel American Legion Post will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where Masonic Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison County Shrine Club Van Fund.
