Hobart's Story

Hobart Riley "Tip" Chandler, Sr., 81, of Frankton, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital following an extended illness. Tip was born on September 16, 1935, in Anderson to Russell and Mary (Graham) Whetzel. On October 9, 1955, he married the love of his life Montie V. "Mabel"(Richmond) Chandler. Tip served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He retired in 1982 as a Detective from the Anderson Police Department. He also worked as a special investigator for the Madison County Prosecutor's Office and Sheriff's Department. He was a member of Madison Christian Church of Frankton, American Legion of Frankton and the Elwood VFW.
Tip is survived by his current companion, Betty Lawler of Anderson; five Sons, Steven Lee (Jackie) Chandler of Cicero, Danny Allen (Pam) Chandler of Anderson, Russell Garrett (Sue) Chandler of Ft. Wayne, Hobart Riley "Chip" (Anita) Chandler, Jr. of Anderson, and Jeffrey David Chandler of Alexandria; six grandchildren, Katie (Craig) Robinson, Michael (Jackie) Chandler, Russell (Kristina) Chandler, Jr., Mellissa (Chris) Carey, Natosha Chandler and Kolin Chandler; and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Tip was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Montie V. "Mabel" Chandler; half brother, Lester Clyde "Butch" Helton; and sister, Barbara.
Funeral service celebrating Tip's life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2017, at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home in Frankton with Pastor Donna Herring officiating. Burial will follow with full Military Rites provided by the U.S. Navy and the Elwood American Honor Guard Unit in the K. of P. & I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Frankton.
Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home, Frankton.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Frankton Volunteer Ambulance Service through the funeral home.
