Joann's Story

Text size

Joann M. Burnett, 60, Indianapolis, formerly of Anderson, peacefully departed Feb. 7, 2018, at her home in Indianapolis.
She was a graduate of Anderson High School Class of 1975 and received her associate degree in accounting from Ivy Tech State College in 1989.
She was a dynamic Black woman who inspired those who loved her with her infectious laugh, her quirky sense of humor and her love for her family and the possibilities for justice in the African American community in Indiana.
Joann was a faithful servant of the Lord, first; a devoted mother, loving sister and generous friend whose smile lit up a room. After 15 years of service, she retired from the United States Post Office. Always a servant of community, Joann volunteered with a number of different organizations across Indiana. Joann's hometown church family was Second Missionary Baptist Church, Anderson, and was an active member of Light of the World Christian Church in Indianapolis.
She leaves a legacy of two children, Jasmine N. Burnett, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Nig'el J. Burnett, of Atlanta, Georgia; brother, Norman James Robinson, of Indianapolis; sisters, Janie (Rev. Roosevelt) Boyd, of Anderson, Geraldine "Gerrie" (James ) Jackson, of Indianapolis, Beverly Joyce Burnett, of Anderson, and Jennifer Burnett, of Detroit, Michigan; a host of nieces and nephews; her beloved puppy, Henry Earl; and best friends, Barbara Blair and Donna Franklin; and her close friend, Gerald Ellis.
Joann is predeceased by her parents, Nathaniel Pete and Dorothy Louise Burnett; grandparents Ulysses Wilkinson, Beatrice Wilkinson, Elbert Burnett, Sadie Burnett; aunt, Betty Jean Wilkinson; and brother Nathaniel Eugene Burnett.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, at Light of the World Christian Church, 4646 N. Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN 46228, followed by the funeral services at 11 a.m. There will be a private burial at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
