John L. Stewart, 72, formerly of Anderson, died on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, at his home in Sierra Vista, Ariz. His family was around him.
John was born and raised in Anderson. He was nurtured at Whetstone United Church of Christ where many generations of his Stewart and Stottlemyer ancestors were members. He was a 1962 graduate of Madison Heights High School, and Indiana University-Bloomington. His IU radio-television journalism degree took him from a CBS affiliate in Louisville into financial marketing and to 20 years in his role as Public Information Officer for the State of Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency from which he retired in 2010.
John was a member of the Indiana National Guard and the Army Reserves. He was also a member of the Fellowship Masonic Lodge 681.
John has been a Sierra Vista, Ariz. resident since 2009. He was a talented home handyman who painted, did wiring and plumbing, and built a stunning library. His talents made his house into a home he loved. He enjoyed many genres of music and his CD's filled a six-foot cabinet. Movies and trivia were his specialty.
Surviving John are his wife, Lynn; and three children, Anne-Nicole (Sean) Casey of Sydney, Australia, Ian (Dezeré) Stewart of Buckeye, Ariz., and Michelle (Joe) Hathaway of Nicosia, Cyprus. He has three grandchildren, Spencer Hathaway at Indiana University, Grace Hathaway at University of Arizona, and Anna Hathaway of Nicosia, Cyprus. Also surviving are his brother, Jeff Stewart of Anderson; and many relatives and friends in the Anderson area.
His parents, John W. and Betty (Fred) Stewart, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 19, at his much-loved church, Sierra Vista United Methodist.
