Joseph E. Cox, 87, passed away Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 at Summit Convalescent Center in Summitville following an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 12, 1930 in Richmond to Frederick and Florence (Knoll) Cox and has lived in the Anderson area since 1950.
He graduated from Richmond High School-Class of 1948. Joe retired from Delco-Remy in Anderson after more than 25 years of employment. He was a skilled auto mechanic and owned and operated C & M Automotive, formerly of Anderson. He also enjoyed auto racing and reading.
Survivors include his wife, Harriet (Hendrickson) Cox-married April 11, 1974; son, Michael Scott Cox in Utah; daughter, Susan Elsworth, Alexandria; step-son, Dale Newby, Rock Hill, South Carolina; step-daughter, Marilyn Newby, St. Peters, Missouri; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marth Webb-Indianapolis and Lois Harting, Yorktown; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Emerson Lee Cox.
Graveside services honoring Joe's life and legacy will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Maplewood Cemetery, 200 College Drive, Anderson. Pastor Keith Wooden will officiate. Family and friends are invited to call at the Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.
