ANDERSON [mdash] Joseph (Joe) Alexander Helpling, 82, a lifelong resident of Anderson, Indiana, passed away July 2, 2019, after a 23-year battle with Parkinson's Disease.
He was born September 17, 1936, in Anderson, Indiana, the son of Osmond and Nellie Helpling.
He is survived by his children, Chris (Lisa) Helpling, Karla (Rick) McMahan and Kent (Debra) Helpling; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Ann Douglas, Martha Helpling and James (Brenda) Helpling, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Osmond (Sonny) Helpling Jr.
After attending St. Mary's and Columbia Military Academy, Joe began working in the family business, Helpling Oil Company. He was instrumental in building and managing Anderson's first Mr. Quick Automatic Car Wash and Deep Rock gas stations with family.
He spent many days assisting his uncle, Joe Helpling, with Sun Valley Speedway. Later in life, he worked for Freightliner, and then he was an owner-operator with Helpling Trucking.
His masterful entrepreneurial skills continued until a week before he passed; he was always thinking of ways to make money.
The family's fondest memories include his love for the numerous family card games, his passion for boating on many Indiana lakes and his enjoyment of practical jokes.
A celebration of life for Joe is scheduled for September 21, 2019, at 1 p.m. starting at Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson, Indiana, and proceeding to Mounds State Park in Anderson.
