Larry "Rex" Smith, 76, lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana after a brief illness.
Rex was born June 21, 1941, in Elwood to Carl and Jennie (Wilhoite) Smith. On Oct. 12, 1969, he married the love of his life, Barbara A.(Cox) Smith and she passed away on Sept. 2, 2008.
Larry retired in 1996, from General Motors. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 662 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Rex enjoyed spending time with his family. Swimming in his brothers pool, playing cards and just socializing with his family and friends.
Larry is survived by son, Doug (Jennifer) Mason of Russiaville; two daughters, Kathy (Joe) Miller and Cindy Lovell, all of Elwood; four brothers, Skip (Shirley) Smith of Anderson, and Phil Smith, Allen (Pam) Smith, and David (Debbie)Smith, all of Elwood; six sisters, Dottie (Frank) Rittenhouse and Peggy Mackey, all of Elwood, Tiney (Bill) Lazarus of Florida, Diane (Jerry) Holtsclaw of Frankton, and Kathy (Jim) Burris of Elwood; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara A. Smith; sons, Darren and Eric Smith; two sisters; and one brother.
Funeral service celebrating Rex's life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
