Luther 'Luke' Barnes

Luther "Luke" C. Barnes, 80, of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 4, 2018, at his residence after a brief illness. Luther was born in Bulls Gap in Green County, Tennessee, on Aug. 28, 1937, to Clarence and Maude (Carter) Barnes.
On Nov. 24, 1962, he married the love of his life, Janice Sue (Decker) Barnes. They shared over 53 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 2016.
Luther graduated in 1955 from Wendell L. Willkie High School. Luther retired from Delco Remy in Anderson. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 662. Luther was the owner and operator of "Luke's Barber Shop."
Luke was responsible for giving many boys their first haircut. Luther was a character and had the gift of gab. A 10-minute haircut with Luther could typically take an hour...or longer. Luther had a big heart and didn't know a stranger.
Luke formerly worked for Etchison's Barber Shop and worked for Frank Depolo. Luther was an avid Studebaker car collector, he loved to travel, play cards and was a practical jokester. More than anything Luther enjoyed visiting with friends and sharing stories. He especially treasured his time with his sons and their families.
Luther is survived by son, David Barnes of Elwood; son, Dean Barnes of Dayton, Ohio; grandchildren, Kayla, Denise and Austin Barnes; and several nieces and nephews.
Luther was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Sue Barnes; father, Clarence Barnes; mother, Maude Barnes; three brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service celebrating Luther's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, with Robert Bickel officiating. Burial will follow in Elwood City Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, May 11, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson St., Elwood.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Mercy Hospital Foundation.
