Martha H. (Knetzer) Davis, 97, of Muncie, died peacefully Monday morning, Jan. 22, 2018, at Westminster Village. She was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Putnam County, Indiana, oldest daughter of the late F. Gilbert and Helen (Dietrich) Knetzer.
She graduated from high school in Filmore, Indiana, and completed a business curriculum to prepare her for a career in various accounting jobs. Martha was also an accomplished pianist, often accompanying her father, a singing evangelist. She also served as organist in many churches throughout her life.
She married Dr. Earl C. Davis in 1941 and was his devoted wife for 66 years until his death in 2008. Together, they served various churches throughout Indiana including full-time pastorates in Christian Churches at Plum Creek (Rush County), Union (Johnson County), Salem (Washington County), Yorktown (Delaware County) and North Salem (Hendricks County). She was a nurturing and loving mother to their five children: Martha Sharon, married to Marty Lang, Richard E. (deceased), married to Cindy (Jackley) Davis, Merribeth J., married to Earl Bruning, Gilbert K., married to Stacey (Lee) Davis and, Wilbur R., married to Cindy A. (Porter) Davis.
Raising five children on the salary of a "country pastor" allowed her virtues of frugality, resourcefulness and creativity to shine in all the domestic disciplines, including food selection and preparation, finding appropriate clothing and supporting the many extra-curricular activities of her active family. As the children matured, one of her enduring sources of personal pride was applying her considerable stenographic skills to typing many theses and dissertations for her husband and her children, most of which required using carbon paper with zero mistakes tolerated.
Martha thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by her family, often engaging in board and word games to ensure every member of the family was involved, including their nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Known for her gentle strength and quiet wisdom, Martha leaves a legacy of grace and love which impacted all with whom she interacted.
The funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday at Hazelwood Christian Church of Muncie with calling preceding the service beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Jason Jones and Rev. Matt Carder will lead the memorial service. Porter Funeral Home of North Salem is coordinating the arrangements.
