Newell 'Newt''s Story
The Kingdom of Heaven rejoiced at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, when Newell Preston Collins, better known as Newt, entered into the gates of Heaven with his Lord and Savior.
A resident of South Bend since 1956, Newt passed away at the age of 91 years old.
Born Aug. 20, 1926, in Anderson, he was the son of Ward J. and Florence Pulliam Collins, and was a graduate of Anderson High School, Class of 1945. He also attended Anderson Business College. He was a certified lay speaker in the United Methodist Church.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946. He saw combat service in Mindinao in the Southern Philippines with the 31st Dixie Division and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Medal and two battle stars.
He was a salesman for 35 years, primarily in the automotive parts field, the last 15 years with State Products Corp., from where he retired.
In 1949 in Anderson, he was married to Martha Helen Rockwell. She passed away in 1986.
In 1988, he married Dolores "Peggy" Callander who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Richard (Yolanda) Collins, and Donald (Sandra) Collins, all of South Bend; his daughter, Peggy Jo (Roger) Leonhard of South Bend; two stepsons, Skip (Mary) Callander of South Bend, and Daniel (Lynda) Cedent of Miramar, Florida; two stepdaughters, Barb (Eddie) Druelinger of Granger, Indiana, and Connie Stratton of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and six great-great- grandchildren; as well as two sisters, Evelyn Adkins of Nashville, Tennessee, and Patricia Walls of Ocala, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Collins; granddaughter, Melissa Collins; grandson, Timothy Collins; and three brothers, Ward J. Collins Jr., Charles M. Collins Sr., and Jackson Earl Collins; and a dear cousin, Iola Tweedy Pendergras who was of Anderson.
Newt and Peggy formerly attended Nappanee Missionary Church, and more recently the First Brethren Church of South Bend.

Services celebrating Newt's life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., where the family will receive friends after 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
