Robert L. "Bobby" Thornberry, 80, Elwood, died Sept. 5, 2017, at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood after a long life of smiles.
He was born Feb. 10, 1937, in Elwood, son of Charles and Mary (Courtney) Thornberry. Bobby worked at Red Gold and Fettig's Canning companies as a janitor for over 30 years.
He was a member of the Central Wesleyan Church in Elwood, and was best known for being Elwood's official "Bell Ringer" for the Salvation Army at Christmas time for over 40 years at the Elwood Kmart.
He received the Elwood Samaritan Heart Award in 2008; was parade marshal for the Elwood Fourth of July parade in 2001; and Master Elf of the first-ever Christmas parade in 2012. He enjoyed walking with his sister, and always had a smile on his face.
Bobby's family includes siblings, Charles Thornberry, George (Marilyn) Thornberry and Clara Thornberry, all of Elwood; niece and caretaker, Norma (Lance) Baker of Elwood; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law, Mary Thornberry in 2011.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Ben Capshaw officiating. Burial will follow in Elwood City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and will include a Salvation Army memorial service at 6 p.m.
