Tom Daniel Shinness, 56, passed peacefully Feb. 17, 2017, in Nashville, Tenn., surrounded by family.
Tom was born Dec. 1, 1960, in Marion, to Les and Ruth Shinness. Growing up in Anderson, Ind., he graduated from Highland High School in 1979. He also graduated from Christ for the Nations Institute, Dallas, Texas, thereafter serving as director of their stringed orchestra.
Tom lived in Nashville, Tenn., for many years where he was a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter. He was known among local musicians for his broad musical talent, gentle spirit and sense of humor.
Tom was a member of Grace Center, Franklin, Tenn., where he served on the Sunday morning spontaneous worship team. He reported this to be his favorite time of the week. He is greatly missed by his worship team members.
Tom is survived by daughters, Jasmine Shinness, San Diego, Calif., Heather Shinness and Ginger Shinness, Girdwood, Alaska; mother, Ruth Shinness-Brinduse (Dan) of Anderson, Ind.; brothers, David Shinness (Alynne), Xi'an, China, and Roger Shinness, Cicero, Ind.; a sister, Molly Estabrook of Anderson, Ind.; and nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, David Lester Shinness.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Anderson, Ind.
Tom's classmates have established the "HHS Class of 1979 Tom Shinness Memorial Award for Music Education" which will provide for a Highland Middle School seventh grader to rent or purchase an instrument and pay for lessons. Contributions may be made to "Anderson Education Foundation" with "Shinness Music Education Award" in the memo line and mailed to the Anderson Education Foundation, 1600 Hillcrest Ave., Anderson, IN 46011.
