Velma Lee Cotton, 88, of Anderson, passed away at Community Hospital of Anderson after an extended illness.
She was born March 23, 1930, in Helicon, Alabama, and graduated from Helicon High School. After graduating, she taught primary education in the Helicon School System. Velma was a resident of Anderson for 66 years. She retired from St. John's Hospital after 25 years of service. She was the co-owner of Cotton Construction for 50 years and the owner of Cakes by Velma for 15 years.
She was a member of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church; active in the Usher Ministry, Senior Mission and one of the charter advisors of BMBC Junior/Youth Usher program.
Velma leaves to mourn: three sons, Lewis Cotton and Rodney Cotton, both of Anderson, and Kem Cotton of Bloomington; three daughters, Juliet Ingram and Vanessa Newsom, both of Anderson, and Melinda Cotton of Indianapolis; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; brother; R.B. Harris of Birmingham, Alabama; and one sister, Bertha Rutledge of Detroit, Michigan; three brothers-in-laws, Roy (Josefina) Cotton, Walter (Lisa) Cotton, and T.W. Hudson of Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Cotton Jr.; parents, Ella Bell and Lonnie Harris; two brothers, Clifford Harris and Clarence Harris; three sisters, Cora Harris, Alcine Berry, and Maxine Richardson; granddaughter, Tracy Ingram; two sons-in-law, Fred Ingram and Ervin Newsom; and daughter-in-law, Bertha Cotton.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, 2124 Cedar St., Anderson, with visitation from 10 a.m. to noon. The Rev. Anthony Harris will officiate. Burial will follow in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
