Verne's Story

Verne Alfred Petry died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Community North Hospital on Dec. 3, 2017, after an extended illness. He was 83.
He was born on May 24, 1934, to John T. and Verna Y. Petry in Anderson. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1952, and Purdue University in 1956 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked his entire career for Delco Remy Division of General Motors, first in Anderson, and later at the Muncie Delco Battery plant, retiring in 1988.
He was class president of the AHS class of '52 and a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at Purdue. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1965, attaining the rank of captain. He was one of the founders of Youth For Christ in Anderson, serving as a board member, and a founder of Liberty Christian School, where he served 29 years on their Steering Committee.
He loved working on his farm southeast of Pendleton, and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends on Lake Syracuse in Northern Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joanie A. (Lowry) Petry; his brother, T. Neal Petry of Delphi; his sister, Neva Y. Arnold of Indianapolis; a son, Kurt S. (Beth) of Ellettsville, Indiana; daughter, Jill L. of New Richmond, Wisconsin, and son, Jeff S. (Valerie) of Pendleton. Grandchildren include Joshua V. (Samantha) Petry, Nathan J. Petry, and Daniel T. Petry of Pendleton, and Tyler T. Parent and Jacob J. Parent, of New Richmond, Wisconsin.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Whetstone Christian Church, 5940 Madison Ave., Anderson, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m.
