William J. Durr
He was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Elwood to William Harmon and Rachel Eva (Boring) Durr. Bill retired in 1987 from Fisher-Body Co. in Marion, and also formerly worked at Delco Remy in Anderson. Bill attended Elwood schools, and later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Marie (Hanlin) Simmons on Feb. 9, 1946.
Bill was a member of St. Joseph Church, Elwood Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 0053 all in Elwood. He was Past-President of St. Joseph Cemetery.
Bill's family includes stepson, Ranny (Janice) Simmons of Elwood; three sisters, Betty Ross of Greenwood, Barbara Leisure of Frankton and Carolyn (Larry) Snyder of Frankton; grandson, John (Theresa) Simmons; great-grandson, Shane (Kristen) Simmons; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Marie Simmons-Durr; four brothers, Edward, Floyd, Marion, and Lloyd Durr; three sisters, Edith Juanita Prater, Mary Hoover, and Evelyn Durr; stepdaughter, Penny Rae Simmons; and grandson, Matthew Simmons.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church in Elwood with Father Dan Duff officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Elwood with military honors by the U.S. Navy and American Legion.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood, including a Rosary service at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church.
