Barbara's Story

Barbara J. (Cougill) Mumaw, 89, Alexandria, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Community Hospital of Anderson following a brief illness.
She was born on Oct. 18, 1927, near Spartanburg, Ind., to Ralph and Miriam (Hoover) Cougill and has lived in Alexandria since 1965. She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School-Class of 1946. Barbara had worked at Perfect Circle (Dana) Corp. in Hagerstown and as a nurse's aide in the Pediatrics Department of Community Hospital-Anderson. She retired in 1989 as an aide in the Orthopedics Department at St. John's Hospital in Anderson.
She was a member of the former Alexandria First United Methodist Church and currently a member at Epworth United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the former Alexandria Eastern Star and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary. Barbara enjoyed the time she spent at Lake Dewart with family, she was an avid Colts fan and enjoyed reading Louis L'Amour westerns. Her church family was very important to her. She received great pleasure and enjoyment from time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Mark (Marilyn) Lewis of Muncie, and Ray (Brinda) Lewis of Washington State; two daughters, Dawn Mumaw (Mike Lynch)of Alexandria, and Melanie Jettinghoff of Delphos, Ohio; four grandchildren, Amy (Elton) Hines of Orestes, Amber (Mike) Kelly of Anderson, Sabrina (Terry) Blevins of Washington State, and Shaun Lewis of New York, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Nevaeh, Donovan, Devon, and Charley; sister, Joyce Wampler of Alexandria; nieces and nephews; and two granddogs, Misha and Charley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, James Mumaw in 2003.
Services honoring Barbara's life and legacy will take place at 6 p.m. Monday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with Dr. Constance Cherry officiating. Cremation will follow the service with interment of the cremains in Park View Cemetery at a later date.
Friends are invited to call at the Owens Funeral Home on Monday after 2 p.m. prior to the services.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Epworth United Methodist Church through the funeral home.
The family would like to extended thanks and appreciation the ICU staff at Community Hospital-Anderson, Nurse Shelley, Nurse Latheda, Dr. "A", Chaplain Rob Mifflin and Community Hospice Care for the compassionate care they gave to Barbara and our family.
