David C. Haston, 77, of Sparta, Tenn., passed away Monday morning, March 13, 2017, at Hospice of Cumberland County.
David was born July 4, 1939, in the Big Bottom Community of White County to the late Smith and Ethel Dodson Haston.
At the age of 5 years, his family moved to Anderson, Ind. He attended Anderson High School before joining the U.S. Marines in 1956. After serving in the Marines, he was a proud member of the Anderson Fire Department in Anderson, Ind., for 26 years, retiring in 1990.
He had a passion for woodworking, making dollhouses and birdhouses out of reclaimed barn wood.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters, Margaret Swafford, Mary Ockomon and Mildred Cochran; brothers, Ernest Haston, James Haston and Douglas Haston; and nephews, Greg Haston and Scotty Haston.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Haston of Sparta; daughters, Deanna and Dan Smith of Muncie, Ind., Kathy and Doug Phillips of Kinston, N.C., Gail Haston of Montrose, Calif., Beth Haston of Fishers, Ind., Valerie and Kenneth Wood of Crossville, Tenn., and Holly and Phillip Irvin of Cookeville, Tenn.; sons, David Haston of Burnside, Ky., Shane Haston of Huntington, Ind., and Darryl and JoAnn Hensley of Quebeck, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandsons; and 11 great-granddaughters.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home, Sparta, Tenn. Burial will follow in Graveyard Ridge Cemetery in Van Buren County with full military honors rendered by the Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. today. Pastor Doug Phillips, Skip Ockomon, Joseph Hensley and Wayne Sullivan will officiate.
Jesse Clouse, Geof Dyer, Bub Ethchison, Shane Haston, Ethan Hensley, Ben McKenney, David Haston, Patrick Phillips, Haston Pawlik and Matthew Watson will serve as pallbearers.
