Dr. E. John's Story

Text size

Dr. E. John Pole, Professor of Emeritus, 94, Muncie, passed away on May 14, 2017, at his residence.
John was born July 25, 1922, in Phoenix, Arizona, to David and Bertha Pole. He was the beloved husband for 27 years of the late Rita (Hackworth) Pole.
Survived by many friends especially Joan Keesling who lovingly cared for him during his last days.
John lived as he died, always on his own terms. John was unique. A true individual, true to himself and his own set of values. He had a lust for learning and taking it all in at his own pace. He was president of his high school class and didn't waste a second of becoming bored. After receiving his undergraduate and master's degrees in elementary/secondary education and administration/guidance from Arizona University, John completed his doctorate at Columbia University.
He enlisted and proudly served his country four years as a member of the United States Navy during World War II and was involved in the testing of experimental parachutes. He enjoyed reading, particularly books on history and possessed a large personal library on many subjects. He also had a lifelong love of playing cards. During his final years, friends were told to never plan anything on Mondays, his day for playing bridge.
John held the view that students from minority ethnic backgrounds should be given access to the whole curriculum. He worked tirelessly to change attitudes, and promoted good practice in schools. In 1966, he developed and executed a "model" program for preparing teachers for working with ethnic diverse and marginalized student populations.
Dr. Pole above all else enjoyed teaching and counseling his students. He was a passionate teacher who pushed his students toward greater clarity and better understanding. His unconditional love and empathy enabled students to feel safe in becoming more fully a competent educator.
He listened and often responded, "You're wonderful!"
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Dr. Ronald Naylor officiating. Entombment will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.
Friends may call one hour before services Wednesday at the mortuary.
