Text size

Hurlie "Dwight" Hobbs, 86, Frankton, and formerly of Elwood, went to be with his wife Betty in Heaven Jan. 13, 2017, at Community Hospital in Anderson.
He was born August 5, 1930 in Elwood to the late Paul and Lucille (Collier) Hobbs. Dwight grew up in South Elwood, where he met the love of his life, Betty Bitner. Dwight and Betty shared 56 years together, getting married on October 9, 1948 and she passed away on December 3, 2004.
He retired from Delco Remy in Anderson in 1982 after 35 years of service. Dwight and Betty loved spending time at Hill Lake and at their home in Lakeland, Florida. He was a member of the UAW Local 662 and the Elwood Elks Lodge 368, where he loved playing pull tabs and visiting friends, especially his buddy George Dudley. He loved watching his grandkids and great-grandkids play sports, and never missed a chance to go play a round of golf. Dwight loved going to the casino and going to Bernies in Frankton. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Dwight is survived by his sons, Kerry (Eloise) Hobbs, Elwood and Steve (Cheryl) Hobbs, Frankton; grandchildren, Angela Dunn, Matt (Michelle) Hobbs, Stephanie (Shane) Sumpter, Mindy LaPierre, Kinzie (Chad Clevenger) Hobbs and Jonathan LaPierre; ten great-grandchildren, Devon (Vanessa) Dunn, Dwight Dunn, Andrew (Meghan) Dunn, Nicholas Hobbs, Kelby LaPierre, Emma Sumpter, Kinley LaPierre, Kynald Couch, Logan Sumpter and Kaceton Couch. He had a very special bond with his great-grandson Kelby and five other great-grandchildren that would see him almost every day, Emma, Kinley, Kyndal, Logan and Kaceton. Dwight has four great-great-grandchildren, Maleah Dunn, Lillian Dunn, Laila Dunn and Kingston Dunn; two brothers, Laymond Hobbs and David Hobbs; several nieces and nephews; all of the daycare kids at Nanny's who loved him; and many friends at Bernies, who were very good to him.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; sister Wavylyn Smith; and brother Harold Hobbs; and grandson, Cloid Hobbs.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dunnichay Funeral Home. At 7 p.m. the Elwood Elks will conduct an Elks Memorial Service. Following the Elks, Chaplin Rob Mifflin will officiate Dwight's funeral service.
