James's Story

Text size

James Robert Anderson, 70, longtime resident of Anderson, passed away Sept. 7, 2017. His passing occurred at the home with family after a courageously lengthy battle with ALS.
He was born May 6, 1947, in Terre Haute, to James and Josephine Anderson.
James made an indelible imprint on the lives of many, all of which considered him to be a kind-hearted man full of wisdom and guidance. He graduated from Gerstmeyer Technical High School in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army 1966-1968; subsequently, he attended Indiana State University and ITT. After a short stint serving the U.S. Postal Service, he embarked on a 37 year career with the Ford Motor Co. Similarly, James embraced a lifelong role as a civic servant. He was an active participant in the community through youth coaching and mentoring. In particular, he became a well-respected basketball coach at the Wilson Boy's Club; most notably, he coached the 1980 boy's basketball team to Anderson's first AAU National Championship.
James will be revered for his passion to support the success of others, as well as his love for music. Known as an incredibly kind and friendly soul, he never met a stranger as he would strike up a conversation with anyone. His interest in the success of others created a legacy that inspired others to dream more, learn more, and become more than they ever imagined.
He will be missed by his devoted wife, Patricia Anderson; his children, Angela Anderson, Michael (Laura) Anderson, Jeffrey Anderson, and Eric Anderson; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He will equally be missed by one sister, Delores (Leon) Carter; one brother, Michael Anderson; a sister-in-law, Eunice Anderson; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Barry Anderson. He is also survived by an angel who has been a longtime friend and especially helpful during the fight with ALSGreg Campbell.
In honor of his life, there will be a reflection dinner at New Hope United Methodist Church, 1503 Rev. J.T. Menifee St., Anderson, on Friday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m.
