Larry L. Goins, 79, of Anderson and former lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Community Heart Hospital in Indianapolis following extensive health complications and a blessed life.
He was born Feb. 5, 1938 in Elwood, the son of Bernardo and Juanita (Ebert) Goins. Larry retired from Steel Parts Corporation in Tipton in 1996 after 40 years of service. Larry was also currently the staff organist at the First Church of the Nazarene in Anderson for the past 34 years. He was a 1956 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School.
Larry married the love of his life, Carolyn "Kay" Hinds on Nov. 5, 1960, and they shared over 56 years of marriage together.
Larry was blessed with the gift of music at a very young age, and played organ and piano all of his life. He was a piano and organ instructor for 58 years teaching countless students and adults through his lifetime. Larry was a church organist for 16 years at the Central Wesleyan Church in Elwood; 12 years at the Alexandria Church of the Nazarene; and 34 years as staff organist at First Church of the Nazarene in Anderson. Larry was well-known for performing countless organ performances in Elwood churches, Anderson churches and several years at the Paramount Theater in Anderson. In addition, Larry assisted with the Elwood High School Variety Show for many years as well as numerous music related performances with his children and grandchildren.
Larry was well-known and often requested to play for numerous funerals and weddings throughout his career in music. He was a devoted Christian, husband, father and grandfather. In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking, baking, painting using Bob Ross technique, and formerly made chalk drawings. Larry was especially known for having a great sense of humor and truly enjoyed spending time with his family and fellow Christians. His impact on his family, church and community will never be forgotten.
Larry's family includes his wife, Carolyn "Kay" Goins of Anderson; son, Ronald Goins (girlfriend Carol Heitman) of Fishers; daughter, Pamela (husband Brian) Gust of Pendleton; brother, Leland (wife Janet) Goins of Atlanta, Ga;. sister, Karen (husband Mel) Fletcher of Greenwood; five grandchildren; Zachary, Landon, Allison, Miranda and Brayton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Delbert Burton; and Kay's parents, Leonard & Loretta Hinds; and Kay's step-father, Ora "Gene" Hittle.
A funeral service honoring Larry's life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Anderson with Rev. Gary Cable and Pastor Paul Gilmore officiating, and will be followed by a funeral luncheon at the church.
Burial will take place later in the day at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Elwood City Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will take place on Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood and one hour prior to the funeral at the church in Anderson on Wednesday.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Anderson First Church of the Nazarene.
