Lera B. (Hollingsworth) Porter, 87, Alexandria, passed away on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017 at Community Hospital in Anderson following a brief illness.
Lera was born on May 10, 1929 in Summitville to Arthur and Bonnie (Beard) Hollingsworth and had lived in this area all of her lifetime. On May 10, 1947, she married the love of her life, Gradie Porter, and they shared 42 years of marriage. She had worked as a nurse's aide and in home health care. She was a member of the Lighthouse Fellowship in Elwood. She enjoyed doll collecting and received a Doll Technology Certificate in 1969. In 1976, Lera made by hand a doll honoring the American Bicentennial which is now on display in the Children's Museum in Indianapolis. Lera devoted her life in the service of her Lord and her church. She enjoyed gardening and embraced her role as a homemaker and the care of her family. She received special pleasure and enjoyment from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include children, Torrel (Linda) Porter and Ranotta (Brian) Elbert, all of Alexandria, Greg Porter, Elwood, Jenell (Pete) Diaz, Anderson, Gaylen (Teresa) Porter, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Lee (Irene) Hollingsworth, Summitville; special Friend, Mary Holiday-Frankton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gradie Porter, in 1989; an infant son, Devon in 1948; and four brothers.
Services honoring Lera's faith and legacy will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the Noffze Funeral Home, 501 North Harrison Street, Alexandria with Pastor Larry Schimmel officiating. Interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria. Friends are invited to call on the family on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Thursday after 11 a.m. prior to the services.
