Mark R. Mattox, 54, Alexandria passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Community Hospital in Anderson.
He was born on Dec. 27, 1962 in Castro Valley, California and has lived in the Alexandria area for the past 20 years.
He was a graduate of JD Bassett High School in Bassett, Virginia and Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia. Mark had worked for Scott's Lawn Care. Since 2007 he was employed by the Indiana State Department of Health as a food inspector. Mark served with the United States Army from 1985 to 1990. He was a member of the American Legion. Mark was a lover of history and accumulated items that related to numerous historical periods. He enjoyed camping, campfires with his family and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Sayre Mattox, married Nov. 29, 1996; two daughters, April Sosh and Amy Mattox, both in Marion; son, Andrew Mattox, Marion; step-daughter, Chelsea Rhea, Alexandria; grandson, Logan Sosh; mother, Patricia Hampton,Austin, Texas; two sisters-Dixie Baumgarten-Sparks, Nevada and Ashley Trotter-Boston, Massachusetts; two brothers, Wade Mattox and Gatlin Mattox, of Wilmington, North Carolina; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Beverly and Wallace Cowart, Alexandria; sister-in-law, Renee (Randy) Sizelove, Summitville; two brothers-in-law, Rob (Deneen) Sayre and Randy (Karen) Sayre, of Alexandria and several nieces ,nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Patrick Caulfield; adoptive father-, Dr. Bruce Mattox Sr.; and beloved grandmother who raised him, Dixie Mattox.
Friends may call at the Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Military honors will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and will close the visitation. Cremation will follow.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department through the funeral home.
