Melvin James Tipton, age 77, of Frankton, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at Community Hospital after a brief illness resulting from a fall.
He was born in Richmond on Oct. 12, 1939, to the late William and Elda Tipton. Melvin served our country in the United States Army.
He married Lola (Cave) Tipton on Dec. 18, 1959, and she passed away on July 14, 2006. Melvin was retired from Delco Remy in Anderson after 35 years of service. Following the death of Lola, he married Sandra (Glawe) Tipton on Nov. 9, 2008, and she survives.
Melvin was a member of Madison Christian Church where he was a very active member and Elder. He enjoyed Christian theatrical productions and was in a play just last year. He enjoyed woodworking and wood turning making all kinds of different items for family and friends. In his younger years Melvin enjoyed target shooting and even participated in shooting competitions with his daughter Bonnie. Melvin enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and doing anything he could for his church.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Sandra Tipton; son, Jon Tipton; daughters, Bonnie Tipton and Deborah Bush; grandchildren, Nathan Rasmussen, Tony (Amanda) Rasmussen, Heather Hoffman, Jeff Sarvis, Brad Tipton, Jonathan Tipton; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Matthew (Mariellen) Tipton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lola, and a sister, Marcy Terry.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home, with Pastor Donna Herring officiating. Burial will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson where the United States Army and the Elwood V.F.W. Honor Guard Team will conduct military funeral honors. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Madison Christian Church through the funeral home.
