ALEXANDRIA, Ind. - Betty Jean (Shirk) Hampton, 89, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, following a 3-month illness, at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital.
She was born on June 3, 1930, in Alexandria to Harry and Margaret (Niland) Shirk. Betty was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1948. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Mount Union (now Aultma College) in Alliance, Ohio. Betty was dedicated to the profession of nursing for a total of 51 years. She retired in 2005 at the age of 75.
Betty was a longtime and active member of the Alexandria First Christian Church where she served her Lord and her church as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, lector and committee member for several years. She loved to follow and support her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sports and school events. Betty was a total fan of IU athletics and the Indianapolis Colts. She was a true saint who was always willing to help others and was known by the Alexandria community as the "Grandma Betty" to several children that she cared for in the school system, as well as people who would meet her later. As a caregiver, she would always place others before herself.
She is survived by her sons, Michael (Christy) Howell of Summitville, and Tracy Hampton of Marion; grandchildren, Brad (Shannon) Howell of Summitville, Darcy Howell of Westfield, Holly (Michael) Ackerman of Noblesville, and Jay Hampton (fiancée Emily Kocher) of Alexandria; great-grandchildren, Kaden Howell, Jase Howell, Madelyn Ackerman, Claire Ackerman and Emma Ackerman, Braelyn Hardin and Karly Hougey; brothers, Richard Shirk, James Leonard Shirk and Gilbert Shirk; and several nieces and nephews.

Our children were patients of Dr Morris growing up. It is there we came to know & love “Betty”. We looked forward to visits with her. She was so kind and always had a smile for the kids. She was a special person. Blessings & prayers.
