Cecil Abner Obituary

ELWOOD - Cecil "Livonia" Abner, 94, died Saturday, June 27, 2015, of natural causes at the home of her granddaughter. Until recently, she still resided in Elwood in the home she was born in on July 28, 1920, to Clarence and Almyra (Slack) Maurer. She attended Elwood schools and retired from Guide Lamp Division of General Motors. On December 7, 1935, she married Everett D. Abner. They shared 62 years of marriage and spent 25 years together enjoying retirement with winters in Sebring, Florida. Livonia was a dedicated member of the Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, and a former member of NCCW. There was nothing more precious to her than her family and her faith. The joy of her life was having her family gather for Sunday dinners. She taught by example and will always be remembered for her generosity and kindness to others. In 2010 Livonia was awarded the Samaritan Heart Award. Livonia's family includes four grandchildren, Jill (Randy) Jones-Bayne, William (Marsha) Abner Jr., James (Susan) Abner, and Jodi (Danny) Swinford; 10 great-grandchildren, Kemmon (Katie) D. Jones III, Keah (Kabe) Flanagan, Jason (Molly) Abner, Brachen (Audrey) Abner, Mandy Wright, Breann (Anthony) Cain, Abbey (T.J.) Grondin, Thomas Abner, Cecily Swinford, and Claudia Swinford; and six great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt Abner, Jonas Abner, Bryce Wright, Landen Wright, Hannah Cain and Whitney Cain. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Maurer; and mother, Almyra (Slack) Maurer; her husband, Everett D. Abner who died March 3, 1999; her only child, son William J. Abner Sr.; two brothers, Lee Maurer and Melvin Maurer; one sister, Grace Sheets; great-grandson, Adam Abner; and grandson by marriage, Kemmon D. Jones Jr. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Elwood, with Father Dan Duff of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson St., Elwood, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Joseph's Catholic Church: Building Fund.
