Anderson, Indiana - Cheryl Lynn Stubelt Dunnington (1949-2026) 76, of Pendleton and Anderson, Indiana, passed away Jan. 3, 2026, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Cheryl came into this world May 3, 1949, to Ewald Earnest Stubelt and Reva ROSE Marian Price in Benton Harbor, Michigan, as the youngest of three children. She loved growing up in Benton Harbor and attended the Lutheran church. She is of Russian/Ukrainian descent and is a recipient of her grandparents fighting for all they were worth to get to Canada to have a better life, later settling in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Cheryl grew up with an older brother, Robert "Bob" Eugene Stubelt (deceased 2002) and a sister, Linda Stubelt (deceased 1946) who passed away at birth just three years before Cheryl was born. Cheryl attended Benton Harbor High School and graduated as the class 1967. At 19 years old, Cheryl married Steven Bruce Brant in Benton Harbor and was blessed with two children, Travis and Abra, who brought her so much joy. She and Steve later divorced.
She began what became her career at 18 years old with First Merchant's Bank in Anderson and was first a receptionist, moving up the ladder in time, and was later promoted to Loan Officer, working there for 34 years. She retired at 51 when she remarried. She met Asa Duane Dunnington on a country music dating service. They each called in to the radio station and then they phone dated for quite a while and finally found time to have an actual date. When they did meet for lunch Cheryl knew that day that they would marry. She had a loose end to tie up, so she didn't call him back for six months. When she did, they were already in love, courted, and were married on Dec. 29, 2001, celebrating their 25th anniversary last week. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2001 and in 2003 they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Louisville, Kentucky LDS Temple. She has a strong testimony of Jesus Christ as her Savior. She has a testimony that families can be together forever, and not just on this earth. Asa always said with a smile, "She's the smartest blond he's ever known." He valued her intelligence and help through 25 years of marriage. When this horrible disease started to ravage her, Asa sat by her every day, holding her hand all day long, and he would spoon feed her twice a day. He will miss her tremendously and is a broken man without "his Cheryl."
Cheryl is survived by her sweetheart, Asa Duane Dunnington Jr. of Pendleton and Anderson, Indiana. Also, her two children, Travis (Amy) Brant, and children, Mia and Jenna (twins), and Riley, of Fishers; Abra (David) Meyer, and son Owen from Southport, Indiana; and Asa's children who survive her are David (Lorraine) Dunnington, their three children, Meredith (Josh) and their son, August of South Bend, Indiana; Garrett of Portland, Oregon; Andrew (Luna) of Redondo Beach, California; Jill (David) Aguirre, and their children, Summer, Christian, Isaiah, and Autumn White of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Steven (Sherry) Dunnington, and their children, Wyatt and Brooke of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
