Julius Herbert Cox
ALEXANDRIA [mdash] Julius Herbert "Herb" Cox, 79, passed into eternal life surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, at Ascension St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following an extended illness.
He was born in Alexandria to Claude and Gertrude (Keefe) Cox and was a lifetime resident. Herb had worked for Moco, formerly of Alexandria for 17 years. More recently, he retired from Red Gold in Elwood after 17 years of employment.
He attended the Orestes Baptist Church for more than 35 years where he served as a deacon for more than 25 years. He was currently attending the Community Church of Alexandria. Herb served his God and his church with devotion. He was skilled in so many things with his hands. He constructed model cars for years, worked on small engines and equipment, refurbished second hand clocks and he enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. He was especially devoted to keeping his family homestead in good repair and maintained. Herb enjoyed western movies, especially those starring John Wayne, mowing his yard with his new John Deere tractor, going to the Anderson Speedway and pulling pranks on just about everyone. He was an avid bow hunter and always enjoyed hunting with his best buddy Dean (wife, Louise) Morgan. Herb will be lovingly remembered as a devoted Christian husband, father and grandpa.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Ward) Cox, whom he married Sept. 23, 1963; sons, Tony (Stephanie) Cox and Adam Cox, all of Alexandria; grandchildren, Kyndall Cox, Blake Cox, Paige Cox, Tara McCoy and Kayla Cox; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Marcia Cox (Brian) Pattishall of Elwood; special neighbors, "Jeep" and Helen Crist of Alexandria; brother-in-law, Frank (Sandy) Ward of Orestes; and sisters-in-law, Sharon Ward and Diana Ward, both of Alexandria, Janie Ward in North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Otis Cox, Lester Cox, Duane Cox, Dewey Cox and Leslie Cox; four sisters, Eileen Smith, Wilma Cox, Una Lee Phillips and Alice Darlene Cox.
Services celebrating Herb's life, legacy and faith will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, at Orestes Baptist Church, 23 E. Broadway St., Orestes, with Pastor Pat Robbins officiating. Friends may call at the Orestes Baptist Church after 1 p.m. prior to the service. Cremation will take place. Following the service a procession will leave the church and go to the Community Church of Alexandria where family and friends are invited to attend a fellowship dinner at approximately 4 pm.
Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria is honored to care for Herb and serve the Cox family.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association with envelopes available at the church.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Steven Gatewood, the 3rd floor staff at St. Vincent-Mercy Hospital and St. Vincent Hospice for their kind, compassionate and outstanding care of Herb and his family.
