Anderson, IN - Katherine Gibbs May, age 96, transitioned to her heavenly home on July 23, 2026, after an extended illness.

She was born in Montgomery, Alabama, to James and Ada Gibbs.

Her most notable achievements were joining husband L.C. May in co-founding and co-managing L.C. May Funeral Services Inc. in 1960. The family-owned funeral home continues to serve Anderson and surrounding communities.

Katherine's work also included various secretarial positions at Department of Defense Finance, and Accounting, Indianapolis, for 14 years. Later, she was employed at General Motors, Delco Remy Division where she retired after more than 22 years, where she was a proud union member of Local 663 and 662.

She is survived by her children, Ronald May (Chelsea), Valerie May, David May (Bettie), Joseph May (Veda); daughter-in-law, Sandra Kay May; sister-in-law, Gloria Gibbs; three grandchildren, Camille Breaux (Brittney), Millington, Tennessee, Diane May-Hogan (Brandon), Washington D.C., and Matthew May, Denver, Colorado; great-grandchildren, Nahla Breaux, Jiriaya Breaux, Amara Breaux, and Kwamé Breaux, all of Millington, Tennessee; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Katherine was preceded in death by her late husband; L.C. May; and son, Stanley R. May.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, 2124 Cedar St., Anderson, with a two-hour visitation prior to service. Additional calling hours will also be held 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at L.C. May Funeral Services, 2024 S. Madison Ave., Anderson. Final resting place will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
