ALEXANDRIA - Max D. Ables, 77, Alexandria, died June 20, 2013, at Community Hospital, Anderson, after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 25, 1935, in Redkey, the son of Louis Ables and Pearl (Barnes) Ables, and resided in Alexandria since 1973. Max served his country in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged as a Chief Petty Officer in 1973. He was a master roofer and served as General Foreman for Craig Roofing from 1973 to 2005. He was a member of the Alexandria American Legion and the Portland Moose Lodge. Max enjoyed boating and was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers. Survivors include his wife, Betty (Bricker) Ables, whom he married Aug. 30, 1958; three sons, Steven (Kristine) Ables of Irvine, Calif., Kevin (Jennifer) Ables of Muncie, and David (Gayla) Ables of Alexandria; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Robert Ables and Harold Ables. Friends may call at the Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. The United States Navy and the Elwood Veterans of Foreign Wars-American Legion Military Honors team will perform military honors to close the calling hours. Cremation will follow the services. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Fresenius Dialysis Center of Elwood through the funeral home.
