Max E. Engle
FAIRMOUNT [mdash] Max E. Engle, 75, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a one month illness.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1944, in Wabash County, to Morris and Lucille (Dickerson) Engle, who preceded him in death. Max has lived in the Fairmount area for most of his life and was a graduate of Fairmount High School-Class of 1963. He excelled in many high school sports, especially basketball. Max retired from Delco Remy, Anderson, in 1999 after 35 years of employment. Following his retirement, he worked in building maintenance for Maidenberg Associates in Marion. In 2007, Max joined the staff at Owens Memorial Services as a funeral assistant. He was a valuable part of serving families because he had walked similar journeys of loss that they were walking. His dry sense of humor and warm smile will be sadly missed. He has attended Alexandria First Baptist Church for the past few years. He was also a member of National Rifle Association (NRA). He was a fan of IU athletics, Alabama football and was devoted to the Chicago Bears. He enjoyed fishing and fishing trips. Max loved sports and he excelled in mentoring young people who were sports minded. He was one of the founders of the Fairmount Youth Basketball League. From the day his sons were able to hold a ball of any kind, Max devoted himself to being their #1 fan regardless of what they were participating in. As the grandchildren then came along, his circle of support grew inclusive to them. He has driven hundreds of miles to attend ball games that his grandchildren were playing in. Truly we all can say that we are blessed that our paths crossed with Max Engle.
On Dec. 26, 1969, Max married Susan Hackney, who was the mother of his sons. She preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 1990. He married Sheri (Spence) Wilson on April 6, 2002.
Max is survived by his wife, Sheri Engle; sons, Alix (Kelley) Engle of Kokomo and their children, Jett, Gage and Livia; Beau Engle of Kokomo and his children, Josie, Colt and Porter; stepdaughters, Amber (David) Amick of Battle Creek, Nebraska, and their children Dylan, Dawson and Abigail; Sara (Aaron) Caudell of Fairmount, and their children, Boston and Bristol; Bethany (Brandon) Tinkel of Marion, and their children, Quinn Massey and Leighton Tinkel; sister, Barbara Engle of Fairmount; brother-in-law, Curt (Sheryl) Hackney of Fairmount; sisters-in-law, Debra (Rick) Freital of Jupiter, Florida, Sandra Engle of Fairmount; nieces and nephews, Jodie Spahr, Vince Engle, Katie Hackney and Cameron Hackney; father-in-law, Kenneth Spence of Fairmount; several cousins.
His brother, Larry Engle, died in 2012.
