Melanie (Wood) Gibson
ALEXANDRIA - Melanie Ann (Wood) Gibson, age 65, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, due to an extended illness.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1955, at Naval Station Navy Base, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Roy and Carolyn (Dolenski) Wood. She found her only true love and soulmate, Duane, at age of 20, in August of 1975. They married on Oct. 17, 1975. She loved him and he loved her for a wonderful 44 years.
Melanie lived her earlier years in Lafayette, Indiana, then moved to Alexandria, Indiana. She attended school at St. Mary's in Alexandria, Indiana, and then attended Alexandria High School where she was a member of the Alexandria Band flag troop. Melanie was a hard-working young lady. Melanie was dearly loved by her parents, Roy and Carolyn Wood, and her brother, Rick Wood (wife Nancy).
Melanie loved to love people. She was the most loving and caring mother and grandmother. She never missed a game or event to support her children, and maintained that level of support throughout their adulthood. Melanie and her mother Carolyn together avidly collected Elvis Presley memorabilia and loved going to Memphis, Tennessee, to Graceland. They became friends with many in that Graceland circle. She was a true animal lover and cared particularly for dogs and cats.
Melanie is survived by her husband of 44 years, Duane; her four children, son, Christian Gibson (special friend Lora), son, Kyle Gibson (special friend Michelle) daughter, Cara (Gibson) Horner (husband Kirk), son, Kody Gibson (fiancée Jennifer); five grandchildren, Kierston (Gibson) Garber (husband Rob), Trevor Gibson (special friend Marlee), Cassidy Gibson, Kallie Gibson, Clayton Gibson; brother, Rick Wood (wife Nancy); nephew, Lee Wood (wife Nicole); two sisters-in-law, Rebecca (Mark) Gackie (husband John), Anita Mark; brother-in-law, Kevin Hicks; best friend, Nola (Wisler) Lineberry. All of these she loved and touched deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Carolyn (Dolenski) Wood; father-in-law, Phillip Mark; mother-in-law, Ovijean (Hinton)(Gibson) Mark; sister-in-law, Toni (Mark) Hicks.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 820 W. Madison, Alexandria, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, with Father Dan Duff as Celebrant. Cremation will follow the Mass. The family will receive friends after 11 a.m. on Thursday in the narthex of the church prior to the Mass.
The family would like to thank the Emergency Department staff, ICU, and 2nd floor Neurological Center at Community Hospital of Anderson, Indiana, and also special thank you to Kelly Bishop, RN and aides with Southern Care Hospice for their amazing care.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation at alz.org.
