Robert Allen Fisher Obituary

Muncie, IN - MUNCIE - Robert Allen Fisher, 90, architect, teacher, loving husband and proud father passed away on Monday morning, Dec. 22, 2025, at Westminster Village.

He was born on Nov. 10, 1935 in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Kenneth Allen and Hulda Marie (Urbahns) Fisher. He graduated from Anderson High School and received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Purdue University. After Purdue, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960 and went on to enroll at the University of Florida where he earned his second bachelor's eegree in architecture.

He taught for three years in Manchester, England, where he met his wife, Elaine M. Bramley, before moving to Indianapolis where he practiced architecture at Fleck, Burkart, Shropshire and Associates before moving to Muncie, Indiana, to teach full-time at the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP), Ball State University.

First and foremost, he was a teacher. Through his various roles at CAP his focus was always on the students - their education, their development and their well-being. He taught architectural design, structural systems and architectural thesis. He held regular help-sessions and, as with many professors, served as advisor and counselor.

During his tenure as Dean he shepherded enormous transformation for CAP. He was responsible for: the computerization of the college; the introduction of a new undergraduate degree in Urban Planning and Development, and a graduate degree in Urban Planning; the initiation of a common first year curriculum, and the Accelerated Entry Program which garnered three AIA Awards - one, for the Writing in Design Program which he created and funded. These programs resulted in the doubling of faculty tenure lines and the doubling of overall student enrollments. In the words of a close colleague, "Your tenure represented a time of emphasis on, and dedication to the students, the faculty and the college. It was never about 'Bob' - a humility that is rare today."

In 2013, at the age of 77, he retired from Ball State University as Dean Emeritus of the College of Architecture and Planning after 45 years of service.

Robert was a member of: the American Institute of Architects, the Indiana Society of Architects and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

His awards include: the Charles M. Sappenfield Award of Excellence; AIA Education Award; and AIA Indiana Juliet Peddle Award 2007.

He was a voracious reader and loved to travel - especially if it involved visiting London.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Elaine M. Fisher of Muncie; two daughters, Susan Angela Fisher (husband, Jim Dziatkowicz) of Columbus, Ohio, and Samantha Ann Fisher of Portland, Oregon; two grandsons, Noah and Conner Dziatkowicz; his brother, Scott Fisher of Memphis, Tennessee; sister, Carol Carlson of Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Janice Brown.

There will be no services and cremation will take place.

The Fisher family express their eternal gratitude to the dedicated staff from independent and assisted living and especially the caring and knowledgeable nursing team at Cooper Vista, Westminster Village. They provided exceptional care and support to Robert and the family during his final days.
